Onariase: Dagenham & Redbridge showed togetherness in shock win

Having seen manager Daryl McMahon leave by mutual agreement late on Friday night, Daggers fell behind at Meadow Lane, but were soon back on terms through Angelo Balanta.

And they took all three points after Inih Effiong struck four minutes from time, with the hosts twice denied by the woodwork and also by goalline clearances.

“It just shows the character we’ve got in the squad,” Onariase told the club website, who went on to pay tribute to McMahon.

“Obviously it’s been a huge shock to everyone, but we’ve come together as a team.

“We understand the importance of sticking together and it’s going to be important, especially the run we’ve been on, so we’ve just got to stick together, pick ourselves up and go.

“It is really strange. I think we owe it to the gaffer, he’s put a lot into us, and this performance was just like a thank you and a give back to the gaffer because he has given us everything that we need to perform.

“It’s up to us to go out there and put out the performance and we did that today. We need to keep on doing that going forward.

“But everyone is gutted, he brought a lot of us to this club so we do appreciate everything he has done for us and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Ruben Rodrigues fired the hosts in front, but Balanta levelled soon after following a superb counter-attacking move.

Former Dagger Jodi Jones hit the post before Matt Robinson’s run set up Effiong to fire in off the underside of the crossbar, with County also seeing Macaulay Langstaff denied by the upright in stoppage time.

And Onariase admitted to feeling ‘very tired’ after a backs-to-the-wall effort to protect their late lead, which left them three points off the play-off places.

“Feeling tired, very tired, but on the whole, happy with the result,” he added.

“It was a very professional performance, we stuck together as a team and feeling glad that we got the three points.

“Personal performance I was happy because we got the result, but I was more impressed and pleased with the team performance.

“I feel a lot of the times when we defend well, defenders get a lot of the applause but we actually defended well as a team. You had three blocks off the line, blocking shots, everything. Midfielders, even attackers. When you defend as a team it makes life so much easier.

“We showed the commitment that everyone is working hard together so I can’t take all the praise, I give it all to the team.”

Having recorded back-to-back wins, Daggers will look to maintain their momentum when they head to Maidenhead in midweek.

And Onariase hopes to see plenty of travelling fans at York Road, after their fine support in Nottingham.

“We won the last game and this game. We need to keep it up so that’s what we’re doing,” he said.

“We’re putting the steps in place now and we go from strength to strength.

“We really appreciate the support. We could hear them through the game.

“It’s a long way to come as well so we definitely appreciate the support, especially the tough period we’re going through. We need their support and backing and they gave it to us today. Huge thank you to them.”
