Olly Murs’ fling with TV presenter revisited as engaged singer marks birthday
Newly-engaged singer Olly Murs, 40, and Melanie Sykes, 52, were first linked to each other in November 2017, however the former was at first quick to shut down the rumours.
He initially claimed the pair were just “great friends” who had formed a bond over their shared love of fitness.
He told OK! Magazine: “Me and Mel are great friends and that’s it. We were not dating for a year!”
The Troublemaker singer continued: “We never dated or went out with each other as girlfriend and boyfriend like people were saying.”
Olly was said to have been a number one fan of Mel’s gym selfies.
“It was the start of the year and she came to my tour but there was nothing really in it.”
However, in January of 2018, the pop star confessed the pair had enjoyed a brief fling, while appearing on Loose Women.
Speaking about his love life The Voice UK judge said: “Every time I pick up a paper it seems at the moment to be ‘Olly spoke to this girl, he must be dating her’. I’m like ‘no, I’m single’. Last time I checked it was just me in bed on my own.”
Panellist Kelly Brook grilled him on Sykes, asking: “There was in the paper recently about (someone) who looks like Christine. Did you date Melanie Sykes?”
Olly replied: “Listen, Mel’s amazing, we’re great friends. The rumours that we were dating for a year are just not true.”
Keen to keep pushing, Kaye Adams asked: “But did you have a romance?”
Olly replied: “There might have been something – but that’s all I’m going to say. I’m not going to talk about that. Moving on!”
Meanwhile, Mel posted a picture of herself at the time, alongside the caption: “To all those writing s**** about me and my life.
“This is what a single, happy, healthy, 47yrs old independent mother of two teenage sons looks like.”
Olly later went on to find love with bodybuilder Amelia Tank, 30, and the pair got engaged last year.
Speaking candidly on Heart FM recently, Olly said their wedding date is a “top secret” that he “can’t tell anyone” about.
When asked how involved he has been in the planning, Olly joked: “I’m just paying it.”
He added: “That is basically it, here’s an invoice, pay it. No, to be honest with you that’s a joke. I’m really enjoying it actually; more than I thought I was going to.
“I didn’t realise how much goes into it. But it’s really fun. We’re having a really great time. And it’s you know… we’ve had a few arguments, a few spats. But that happens…”
