Octopath Traveler 2: Tips for beginners

OCTOPATH Traveler was a game with a lot of complexity, and its sequel is no different.

Just like in the first one, there are eight different paths, each with unique skills and jobs to learn.

The paths all intertwine, and it can be difficult figuring out the best team to use.

Here’s our tips for starting out in Octopath Traveler 2.

Octopath Traveler 2: Choosing your starting traveler

Once you start, it won’t be long until you have all eight characters at your disposal.

The only choice that really matters is who you start out with, as this character cannot be removed from your party until you complete their story.

This means they often become the focal point of your team, so you need to choose wisely.

It’s possible to choose any character, but Agnea and Partito are particularly difficult to start with.

As they come from supportive job types, you’ll have an easier time with one of the others.

Octopath Traveler 2: Talking to NPCs

In the sequel, each traveler has two path actions depending on the time of day, and these are the key to most of the game’s secrets.

Steal, Purchase and Entreat will all let you rifle through NPCs’ pockets where the game’s best weapons are hidden.

By using Scrutinise, Inquire or Bribe, you’ll also be able to gain important nuggets of information such as new side quests and locations.

Make sure you interact with NPCs as often as possible to get the most out of Octopath.

Octopath Traveler 2: Save your Latent Powers

Latent Powers are a new mechanic in Octopath Traveler 2, and they are some of the game’s strongest powers.

Throné can use two actions in a single turn, and Osvald can make attacks single-target for a big boost in damage.

If you manage to chain your team’s Latent Powers together, you can destroy a boss in an instant.

Breaks will help charge these back up, but you won’t want to enter a boss without a full set.

Octopath Traveler 2: Finding secondary jobs

Octopath’s combat system is at its best once you have unlocked your character’s secondary jobs.

This gives each character a second set of skills to use in battle, and a new range of passive abilities.

Most of the secondary jobs are in level 30+ areas which seem daunting early on.

However, if you have the Scholar’s Evasive Manoeuvres support skill, you can skip over random encounters.

This is the best way to get secondary skills early and become a lot stronger quickly.

Octopath Traveler 2: Advanced jobs

There are four advanced jobs that you can only find by exploring the world.

These are more powerful than the base jobs, but this time around you don’t get them from winning boss fights.

Instead, like all good things, they are hidden by NPCs out in the world.

You can find the Inventor in the guild near New Delta, but the others are harder to track down.

If you talk to an off NPC with a request that isn’t a side quest, you are likely talking to an advanced guild master.
