October Full Moon: How October Hunter’s Moon will affect your sleep TOMORROW

The full moon in October, also known as the Hunter’s Moon, will be visible from the UK tomorrow afternoon. Is it true the full moon can affect your sleep? Experts and an astrologer weigh in on how the full moon will impact you – and what you can do about it.

On Wednesday we will see the October full moon known as the Hunter’s Moon, the tenth full moon of this year.

The Hunter’s Moon will be at its most visible for the UK at 15:56 on October 20, 2021.

This Moon earned the nickname Hunter’s Moon from the Native Americans.

In September animals were too skinny to hunt, but by November the cold made them scarce.

So October was the ideal time to hunt, particularly with the brightness of the full moon.

2 – Once you get to sleep, you might lose 20 minutes of Zzz’s

The same Swiss sleep study found people sleep for 20 minutes less per night during a full moon.

Also, during the days leading up to the full moon, people had lower evening levels of melatonin.

An essential hormone for sleep, melatonin helps your body acclimatise to day and night.

3 – You will spend less time in ‘deep sleep’

When you sleep through the night, you alternate between different levels of sleep, from light sleep to deep.

A study running over four years found during a full moon, participants had 30 percent less deep sleep than they would on an average night.

This can mean waking up in the morning feeling poorly rested and groggy.

How to improve your sleep

If you’re worried about the full moon interfering with your sleep, try these tips from MattressNextDay for a better night’s kip.

1 – Put your phone down before you go to bed

Historically, people slept worse during a full moon because of the lighter night sky.

It doesn’t help that now we have handheld bright screens to scroll on all evening.

To improve your sleep, try putting your phone down for three hours before you go to bed.

2 – Plan a relaxing evening

Whether it’s having a bubble bath, reading a book or listening to some relaxing music, plan a restful evening so by the time you head to bed you’re feeling calm.

3 – Listen to rain sounds

It’s a common belief that we sleep better when it’s raining outside.

You can’t control the weather, but you can trick your brain into relaxing with the sound of rain, by playing the sound while you settle down.
