NRLW star to face the music for unwanted first

The Broncos have vowed to support winger Ash Werner, who created an unwanted piece of league history by becoming the first NRLW player to be sent off on Saturday night.

Werner was given her marching orders for allegedly biting a Roosters opponent Jayme Fressard during her team’s 36-18 loss.

The incident is expected to be referred straight to the NRL judiciary early next week.

Video shows Werner with her teeth around Fressard’s arm and that led to her dismissal after it was viewed by the bunker.

But the video also shows before the bite, Fressard whacked Werner in the face with her forearm and the Broncos winger was struggling to breathe.

The Broncos are expected to use the fact that Werner could not breathe in their defence.

Werner is one of the most high-profile players in the NRLW, a former Olympic-class bobsledder who was making her debut for the Broncos.

“She’s a lovely lady, we’ll be supporting her,” chief executive Dave Donaghy told Wide World of Sports.

The Broncos lost 18-36 in their round one clash and will host the Gold Coast Titans in a south-east Queensland derby in round two on Thursday, July 27.
