NRL, AFL, Netball all cancelled for the weekend
Scheduled AFL, NRL, and Super Netball games will not be played today, after the Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young confirmed that all professional sports would be postponed until at least 4pm on Tuesday.
All three organisations were set to have multiple contests across the weekend. None have confirmed postponement of their respective sports yet, but the instructions from the government were that all sport – including those at the top level – would be halted as 11 local government areas across Queensland were locked down.
“This is one of the most restrictive lockdowns we’ve had since the start of the pandemic, which makes sense because this is the most infectious variant we’ve had since the start of the pandemic,” Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said.
The NRL has moved it’s entire operation to the Sunshine State, while there were Super Netball games due to be held at Nissan Arena in Brisbane on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon.
One of the five NRL games, between the Dragons and Rabbitohs, is in Rockhampton, which is not one of the areas affected by the lockdown – the other four were in either Brisbane, Gold Coast, or Redcliffe.
The AFL is still spread out across the country, but both the Gold Coast Suns (against the Demons) and the Essendon Bombers, who are playing their home game against the Swans at the Gabba, were set to take the field today.
The Queensland Rugby League has confirmed the cancellation of this weekend’s colts and Queensland Cup games, with a statement from QRL managing director Robert Moore saying he understood it was disappointing for players and fans, but the safety of everyone was the priority.
Moore said the QRL was working to ensure all of those who had already travelled for their games returned home safely as soon as possible.
A call is yet to be made from the NRL.
