Novak Djokovic in tears as Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon loss branded Federer revenge

Djokovic suffered his first defeat on Centre Court in a decade as Alcaraz managed to stun the king of Wimbledon in five sets. The 23-time Major champion raced through the first set in half an hour for the loss of just one game before the 20-year-old settled in and took a two-set-to-one lead.

The Serb managed to force a fifth and admitted that it was tough to lose after being so close. His young son Stefan watched on from his box throughout the four-hour-and-42-minute epic and Djokovic was in tears as he addressed his family.

“Yeah it’s nice to see my son still there still smiling,” he said before stopping his on-court interview to cry. Through tears, he added: “I love you, thank you for supporting me and I give you a big hug and we can all love each other.”

But the 36-year-old still managed to be in good spirits despite suffering such a close defeat and joked that he was even after winning some other close finals in the past. Djokovic continued: “As for me, obviously you never like to lose matches like this. But you know, I guess when all the emotions are settled I have to still be very grateful because I won many, many tight and close matches in the past here.

Referencing the 2019 final – where Federer had two championship points before losing in a tiebreak – he added: “To name a few, you know, 2019 against Roger in that finals when I was match points down. Maybe I should’ve lost a couple finals that I won so I think this is even Steven.”

The world No 2 also joked that he didn’t know Alcaraz would be a problem to him on the grass, with the Spaniard playing just his fourth career event on the surface. Before this year, the Spaniard had made it to the second and fourth round of Wimbledon respectively but won Queen’s before this year’s Championships.
