Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees berates quarterback Drew Pyne
Drew Pyne got an absolute earful.
Midway through the first quarter of Notre Dame’s 24-17 win over Cal on Saturday, Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees was caught by cameras berating the team’s sophomore quarterback. The score was still tied 0-0 at the time.
Calling plays while situated upstairs in the booth, Rees could be seen screaming over the phone, before the camera quickly flashed to Pyne standing along the sidelines with a phone to his ear, listening to Rees’ rage.
“Do your f–king job!” Rees appeared to yell. “The whole f–king team is counting on you!”
After Notre Dame’s rough start to the season, opening 0-2 following losses to Ohio State and Marshall, Pyne took over as the team’s starting quarterback this week. He played in just five collegiate games prior to Saturday.
Rees certainly wasn’t taking it easy on his new signal caller, however.
“I saw that video,” Pyne told reporters after the game. “Coach Rees, I texted him this Sunday and said I want you to be very hard on me. … That’s the standard he holds me to and that’s what I asked for, and I respond well to hard coaching.”
Pyne finished with 17 completions for 150 yards and two touchdowns — and one loud talking to.
Before the game, Notre Dame legend Manti T’eo was honored with a ceremony. It was his first public appearance back on campus since his cat-fishing scandal rocked the sports world in 2012.
