‘No words’: Rare moment in cricket massacre

The Melbourne Renegades’ hopes of tasting WBBL glory for the first time look to have taken an insurmountable hit.

The tournament’s overwhelming favourites only a matter of days ago, the Melbourne Renegades have produced a batting collapse for the ages in The Challenger, effectively ending their hopes of tasting WBBL glory halfway through the first innings.

The Gades found themselves on the back foot from the very beginning of the clash with the Adelaide Strikers and simply couldn’t recover.

Aussie international Megan Schutt bowled Josie Dooley with the first delivery of what turned out to be a very painful innings for the visitors.

Of the first five batters, only Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues managed to crack double figures, with even newly-crowned Player Of The Tournament Harmanpreet Kaur coming up short of answers.

Tahlia McGrath, who tormented India in the recent series, took her wicket lbw.

It just wasn’t the Renegades’ night.

In-form Strikers spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington managed to get a hand to the ball after Eve Jones hit her delivery straight down the wicket.

As the ball sailed onto the stumps, Courtney Webb was caught out of her crease and sent packing for a “diamond duck”; she not only hadn’t scored any runs, she hadn’t even faced a delivery.

“It’s hard to put into words what’s happened tonight. It’s been a complete demolition job,” cricket legend Brad Hodge said in commentary.

It took the Renegades until the 17th innings to surpass the lowest total in WBBL history (66). By that point, they’d lost eight wickets, and eventually finished with disastrous figures of 8-83.
