Nixxes Is Working More and More on Remasters, Claims Dev

Nixxes Software was featured in a brief yet interesting video profile posted yesterday on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.

Lead Engineer Coen Frauenfelder revealed that the studio is now working ‘more and more on creating remastered versions of existing games.

What we provide for the PlayStation Studios is high-quality PC ports and we are also working more and more on creating remasters. We do not create full-blown games, but we focus on specializing in those specific areas.

That’s news to the public, as the Utrecht-based Dutch studio was always known for its PC ports. Established in 1999 to port Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver to the SEGA Dreamcast console, Nixxes continued to port Eidos Interactive games to PC, including Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Hitman: Absolution, Tomb Raider (2013), Thief, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Marvel’s Avengers.

Nearly two years ago, the formerly independent Nixxes was acquired by Sony to bolster the company’s efforts to port their first-party games to the PC platform. The benefits were immediately obvious as Nixxes developed several Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition patches that greatly improved the performance of the PC version. Later, they ported Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, both excellent ports. Their next project is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, scheduled to drop on PC on July 26th.

However, the mention of their new endeavors to create remasters is curious, to say the least. What could Nixxes be remastering? The most obvious idea is FromSoftware’s Bloodborne. PC players have longed to play that game for nearly a decade, but it never appeared despite several rumors. Additionally, PlayStation gamers have been similarly eager to get their hands on an official 60 FPS patch (the unofficial one can only run on consoles capable of launching unsigned code).

The mere prospect of a PS5/PC Bloodborne remaster made by Nixxes is probably enough to make fans giddy, but it’s just speculation at this point. After all, PlayStation’s library includes a ton of classic games that could use a remaster – although none would be as big as Bloodborne.
