‘Night Raiders,’ ‘Scarborough’ neck-in-neck for best film at Canadian Screen Awards

TORONTO – The Canadian Screen Awards is honouring the best in homegrown film and TV at its marquee bash tonight.

The awards broadcast caps off a week of virtual ceremonies handing out dozens of honours across film, television and digital media.

At the front of the best picture race are Indigenous thriller “Night Raiders” and suburban drama “Scarborough,” which after claiming five film prizes apiece Friday, will go up against “Drunken Birds,” “Night of the Kings” and “Wildhood” for the grand prize.

CBC’s gender-fluid millennial dramedy “Sort Of,” which entered the week with a leading 13 overall nominations and has clinched two, is vying for best TV comedy alongside CTV’s “Jann,” Crave’s “Letterkenny,” and CBC’s “Strays” and “Kim’s Convenience.”

Organizers say the hour-long, pre-taped broadcast will feature the comedy stylings of the TallBoyz and guest appearances by stars including Catherine O’Hara, Sidney Crosby and Tatiana Maslany.

The ceremony airs on CBC and its streamer, Gem, at 8 p.m.

The CSAs has already named the bulk of the winners in 145 categories spanning cinema, scripted programming, documentary, broadcast news, reality TV, live sports and children’s animation.
