Nicky Campbell has contacted the police following accusations that he is the unnamed BBC presenter currently caught up in a scandal.

Reports emerged this weekend that a BBC star had been taken off-air amid an investigation into them allegedly sending money to a teenager in exchange for explicit photos.

The individual – said to be a well-known presenter – has been accused of giving more than £35,000 to an anonymous teen for sexual images.

As the story proceeded to make national headlines, Campbell found himself on the receiving end of trolling and decided to put his foot down.

Taking to Twitter, the broadcaster, 62, shared a screenshot of an account that accused him of being the unnamed BBC star.

The account originally shared Campbell’s image alongside the words: ‘This is the BBC host who paid teenager for sexually explicit photos’.

In response, Campbell filed a report with the Metropolitan Police.

He wrote: ‘I think it’s important to take a stand.

‘There’s just too many of these people on social media.’

‘Thanks for your support friends’, he added to his followers.

As a concerned friend asked in the replies how he was doing, Campbell assured he was ‘all good’.

He isn’t the first BBC star to be caught up in speculation about the identity of the presenter.

Earlier today, Rylan Clark made it clear that he doesn’t want his name to be mentioned as part of the conversation.

Taking to social media, the former X Factor star wrote: ‘Not sure why my names floating about but re that story in The Sun- that ain’t me babe.’

‘I’m currently filming a show in Italy for the BBC, so take my name out ya mouths,’ he added, referring to Will Smith’s infamous line from last year’s Oscars, when he told host Chris Rock to keep wife Jada Smith’s name ‘out of his f***ing mouth’.

His statement came after he commented on a post of the newspaper’s front page being shared ahead of publication.

Late on Friday night, Rylan wrote on The Sun’s post: ‘It’s s*** like this that makes Twitter wild, I’m filming a new show in Italy for the BBC.’

Meanwhile, sports pundit Gary Lineker has also spoken out.

Denying that he’s at the centre of the allegations, he stated in a tweet: ‘Hate to disappoint the haters but it’s not me.’

Jeremy Vine has been vocal too, strongly urging anyone who believes it’s him behind the story to reconsider.

‘This is seriously defamatory of me. I have screenshotted it and the retweets and passed it to a lawyer,’ he wrote after being accused.

‘There is no truth WHATSOEVER in what you are saying.’

He elsewhere added: ‘They are completely and utterly untrue.’

In a separate Tweet, Vine wrote: ‘Just to say I’m very much looking forward to hosting my radio show on Monday – whoever the “BBC presenter” in the news is, I have the same message for you as Rylan did earlier: it certainly ain’t me.’

The ‘teenager’ who is said to have received thousands of pounds from a TV favourite is now 20 years of age.

But, the situation is said to have started when they were 17, with their mother saying that money received was used to fund a drug addiction.

When speaking about the alleged incident, the young person’s mother said that seeing the presenter involved on telly made her ‘sick’.

‘I blame this BBC man for destroying my child’s life,’ she added to The Sun.
