Nick Knowles shocked viewers after revealing his favourite – very unusual – pancake toppings on Pancake Tuesday.

The 60-year-old presenter admitted he went for savoury flavours when plating up the doughy food but with a twist.

Comparing the traditionally sweet treat to a Yorkshire pudding, Nick said he lathered his pancakes in gravy whenever he opts to eat them.

Speaking on BBC’s The One Show, he left hosts Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas speechless as he explained his strange choice.

When questioned over their Pancake Day toppings, Nick curtly responded with: ‘Gravy.

‘I know it’s a big call – even in America they would think that’s bold – but if you think about it it’s the same recipe for a Yorkshire pudding so it’s only a flat Yorkshire pudding.’

Jermaine disagreed with the TV star admitting: ‘I don’t know if people are going to see it that way.’

‘My eight-year-old this evening is having lemon and sugar and that’s how he likes them,’ Nick continued sharing his household’s take on the traditional day.

Joined by Rita Wilson on the sofa for the show, the star – who is the wife of Tom Hanks – also weighed in on the pancake debate and joked she would like to ‘give a shout out to the waffles’.

‘When’s waffle day, we need our own waffle day,’ she demanded on Tuesday night’s episode.

Nick was on the programme to promote an upcoming series that will see him take on the Grand Canyon.

Chatting about his latest adventures, he revealed: ‘I went to the Grand Canyon when I was about 28 and went to work in Phoenix, Arizona for a TV station over there when I used to work in news.

‘I went there and it was just the most beautiful place and so when I got a chance to travel again I wanted to go back there but rather than just visit I wanted to throw myself into it.

‘When you see travellers, they’re ex-military and they should be fit but there’s a lot of me and I’m 60 so it’s that thing of can a bloke that’s just off the sofa go and actually have a go at these things and test myself.’

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
