Nicholas Ghesquière goes supersized for Louis Vuitton’s SS2023 collection
Now celebrating his 9th year with the storied fashion house, Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director Nicholas Ghesquière once again trailblazes his unique vision for the brand with their Spring/Summer 2023 collection.
Supersizing the smallest and most delicate details of a garment, models made their way through the runway donning looks with enlarged zippers, gussets, buckles, and buttons, all components that keep and put a piece of clothing together. Accessories were also a key factor in the magnified fantasy of Ghesquière, with Louis Vuitton’s iconic cloche clés key holders and luggage tags appearing in almost 10x their size.
Grounded on the fashion house’s essence of femininity, Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection re-evaluates the meaning of proportions, zooming in on the details often overlooked. However, more than Ghesquière’s play on scale, he also hoped for the collection to disrupt the norms of femininity. “‘Pretty tough,’ that was something we were talking about, and ‘threatening beauty.’ The idea was to look at something pretty, something sweet, and to see in those elements what strength they have,” he says.
Set at the iconic Cour Carrée of The Louvre, Ghesquière collaborated with his longtime friend Philippe Parreno to create an installation for the collection’s venue alongside Hollywood production designer James Chinlund. With this, the three created a set reminiscent of a circus or theme park attraction. From the nostalgic Edison lightbulbs on the ceiling to the red tent-like formation of the venue’s walls. “Being with Philippe and working through the eyes of an artist, sometimes I had the feeling we were a little childish. I think I was maybe more free to break some boundaries for myself.” notes the Creative Director on his collaboration with Parreno.
Louis Vuitton is available in the Philippines online and in-store, with locations in Greenbelt 3 & The Shoppes at Solaire.
