NHL 23’s New Trailer Showcases Gameplay Elements And Revamped AI
Electronic Arts have released the first official gameplay trailer for their upcoming NHL game, giving players an in-depth look at some notable gameplay features coming to the latest iteration of the franchise, NHL 23.
The first part of the trailer focuses on several gameplay elements, detailing the puck movement mechanism, which allows players to shoot or pass the puck while falling. In other words, before losing their balance due to physical contact, players will be able to take their shots or make unexpected manoeuvres. The puck movement mechanism will also be available to defensive players, who will be responsible for foiling dangerous attempts. However, in order to use the puck movement feature, players must double-tap to activate it. As goaltenders will need to be cautious against any unexpected shots, it might potentially improve competition between head-to-head teams.
More details regarding the gameplay were provided in the second chunk of the trailer. As a new feature that has never been used in NHL games before, players will be able to assign powerplay roles to individuals, change them whenever they want, and set their strategies on these specific roles. Electronic Arts revealed that there will be a new powerplay (1-3-1) and penalty kill (1-1-2) setup, allowing players to stick to the formation on their minds. The gameplay trailer also introduced the new “assist” mode, where players can change strategies according to recommendations from coaches. However, it will be up to you to accept them or stick to your plan.
The trailer also gives a brief idea of what to expect from its revamped AI. According to the developer team, more than 300 new animations will be added to the game with the help of improved AI, including both computer and player controller goalies. Additionally, skaters will receive new gestures, allowing them to make some stick moves that players do in real life. For example, they can raise their sticks to signal to the bench to indicate the need for changes. These new features can also be described as quality of life improvements made possible by the revamped AI to offer a more realistic hockey experience.
NHL 23 will also be the first entry in the series to feature female players. Electronic Arts revealed that in order to celebrate the addition of female players from the International Ice Hockey Federation, Sarah Nurse, and Trevor Zargas will grace the cover of NHL 23.
NHL 23 will launch for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on October 14th.
