NFL hopeful triggered Infamous Cleary weapon

Australian college football star Matt McRobert has revealed the “kicking techniques” that he worked on with star Penrith duo Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai.

McRobert, a punter with Sam Houston State Football in Texas, recently worked out with the Panthers where he shared his insight into the art of punting and kicking.

While Cleary has many talents on the NRL field, arguably one of his strongest is his kicking game, which rugby league immortal Andrew Johns has often lauded.

McRobert described Cleary’s infamous spirals and floating bombs as a “game changer”.

“I got to do a lot of kicking techniques with Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai especially,” McRobert told Nine News.

“I taught them how I saw how to punt the ball. Field position-wise, what I would want to do.

“I gave them a few insights in what they could use to craft in their game, which I think Nathan Cleary has done an exceptional job with his spirals and floating balls in the NRL.

“He’s really changed the game with how he hits the spiral.

“It’s a game changer. A ball that floats up there on a dewy night, hard to see in the light and it’s coming down on all sorts of angles.”

Now playing in his last season at the college football level, McRobert says he’s hopeful of advancing to the NFL.

“Some of the greatest punters are playing in the NFL for a reason,” McRobert said.

“I would love to put my name out there.

“I’m hoping the NFL might have an opportunity further down the line.”
