Next-generation Chevy Bolt to have Ultium battery

Barra on Tuesday said the new Bolt would be brought to market on an “accelerated timeline” but did not discuss specifics. A spokesperson declined to say where the product would be built.

“Our customers love today’s Bolt,” Barra said on the call. “It has been delivering record sales and some of the highest customer satisfaction and loyalty scores in the industry. It’s also an important source of conquest sales for the company and for Chevrolet.”

Barra said GM “will keep the momentum going by delivering a new Bolt … and we will execute it more quickly compared to an all-new program with significantly lower engineering expense and capital investment by updating the vehicle with Ultium and Ultifi technologies and by applying our ‘winning with simplicity’ discipline.”

GM has sold more than 175,000 Bolts in the U.S. since it was introduced in 2016. The nameplate began as a hatchback and expanded to include the larger EUV crossover in 2021. The company said nearly 70 percent of buyers who are trading in a vehicle for the Bolt are using a non-GM product.

The new Bolt will join the Chevy brand’s growing EV lineup, which will include the Silverado EV, Blazer EV and Equinox EV, all of which launch this year.

“This is a very capital-efficient, quick way to build on the strong consumer response we have to the Bolt and get an affordable vehicle out into the marketplace,” Barra said. “Frankly, I’m super excited about it.”
