Inspirational NewVIc teachers have been recognised by Basketball England.
William Twigg and Charles Vuong from Newham Sixth Form College have both won a London Teacher of the Year Award. There are 13 awards available within each region, covering all aspects of basketball. They were both selected for 1 of 13 Basketball England awards for the London region and celebrated online at the end of last month.
Both William and Charles were nominated for their outstanding work supporting, encouraging and mentoring students at all levels. The London Teacher of the Year Awards marks the vital contribution that NewVIc staff make to the community through the Sports Academy. The award recognises the selfless dedication and efforts made by staff across the basketball community.
Basketball England’s vision is to create a sport that’s valued in every community and accessible in every school, college and university, and inspires the wider population to engage in the game.
Magdalena Johnson, Vice Principal Student Achievement and Progress added:
“This award is a testament to both of our coaches for their outstanding work. Our staff are committed to delivering an outstanding teaching and learning experience to all learners. Both teachers have worked incredibly hard to support, encourage and motivate students to achieve their full potential through the Basketball Academy. A huge thank you and congratulations to William and Charles for achieving this award.”
William Twigg, Head Coach of NewVIc Knights added:
“It means the world to have received this award. NewVIc Knights Basketball Academy was created 3 years ago and it has provided opportunities to young student athletes that may not have had opportunities at other educational establishments. Without them, I would not have achieved this award.
Having recently moved onto Essex Rebels in the WBBL, I know my fellow winner Charles will continue to develop the Basketball Academy in the right direction.”
Charles Vuong, Head Coach of NewVIc Knights added:
“I am absolutely over the moon with the recognition from Basketball England for the London Teacher of The Year award; it has come as a really nice surprise. Thank you to everyone that was involved in the nominations and putting me forward – it means a lot.”
