NewJeans sets Guinness World Record for fastest K-pop group to reach a billion streams

Even if NewJeans has yet to celebrate its debut anniversary, the girl group has reached a major career milestone after achieving a Guinness World Record (GWR) title under their name.

The GWR announced on Monday, May 8 that the quintet now holds the record for being the first K-pop act to reach one billion streams on music app Spotify on March 8, which is approximately 219 days after their debut.

“On 8 March 2023, South Korean quintet NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein) achieved 1 billion streams on Spotify in 219 days — faster than any other K-pop act (solo male, solo female or group),” GWR’s statement, which was posted on their official website, read.

GWR then praised the girl group as they were able to reach one billion streams on the platform with six songs when the record was set, including their “four-track debut EP ‘NewJeans’ (released on 1 August 2022) and the singles ‘Ditto’ and ‘OMG.’”

The girl group’s current discography is composed of the songs “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” “Hurt,” “Ditto,” “OMG,” and “Zero,” as of this writing.

The world records-giving body also noted that NewJeans broke Blackpink Lisa and BTS’ Jungkook’s records which were achieved within a span of 411 days and 409 days, respectively.

NewJeans is composed of five members, namely, Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. The girl group was formed by South Korean label ADOR, which is a subsidiary of HYBE, where they debuted in July 2022. EDV
