New Year’s Eve Traditions – Ileesha De Silva Newsteadwood

To welcome the new year 2023, the year of the rabbit, many people from all around the world universally celebrate New Year’s Eve on the 31st  December. They welcome this new year in various ways, from food to traditions to even clothes. Some people went out to London to see the fireworks while others enjoyed the sight through the TV at the comfort of their homes. Most people spend it with their families and friends.

Sofia Zernova mentioned, “New years is a special celebration in Russia, me and my family deep cleaned the house and went shopping the day before. On New Year’s Eve, we wished our relatives a happy near year then we made traditional salads and food and waited for the guests to arrive. The children played board games whereas the adults talked.”

“I went to a dinner dance with my family, they played many nice songs and it very enjoyable, there were many delicious traditional foods.” Raveesha De Silva

Likewise, Ky Rahman said, “I went out for a comedy event in London with my family, it was very fun.”

Since many people celebrate New Year’s later, for example, the Chinese New Year begins later in  January and other countries celebrate on other months such as April or even in October, which means they don’t celebrate as much on the 31st . Hence, there were a few simpler approaches to celebrating the new year “I had takeaway and a family group hug.”

Similarly, Tahnee Gangi commented “We did a friend’s potluck – it was very good!”

Regardless of the way you celebrated the New year or when you celebrate it, (due to a few religious and cultural aspects to it) it can mutually be seen as a reset period where people clean their house or make resolutions. It is mainly about looking forward to the future with confidence and fresh starts.

Happy New Year!
