New twist in rivals’ frosty US Open net encounter
Czech star Barbora Krejcikova says she was “humiliated” by two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza after the Spanish star took aim at her antics on the court following the pair’s topsy-turvy fourth-round match at the US Open.
After Krejcikova defeated Muguruza in straight sets earlier this week, she today was matched up against No.2 Aryna Sabalenka, but went down 6-1, 6-4.
Following her loss to Sabalenka, Krejcikova was forced to field a number of questions surrounding her controversial exchange at the net with Muguruza in her previous match.
Muguruza seemed irked by the fact that Krejcikova took a medical timeout late in the match and then took her time between points down the stretch before securing the win.
It resulted in Muguruza informing the Czech that she was “so unprofessional” during an awkward handshake at the net after match point.
Responding today to the moment with Muguruza, Krejcikova says she feels embarrassed.
“I just know what [Muguruza] told me at the net,” Krejcikova said of the exchange. “I don’t know what was happening after.”
“I would say it was pretty negative, but that’s the way it is. I just didn’t expect that I’m going to be accused like this.
“I just felt that I got really humiliated by a grand slam champion, which I’ve never seen.
“It’s tough. I’m sad about it.”
Krejcikova also said her play today was affected against Sabalenka by “not really being in a perfect shape” after dealing with cramps and dizziness during her match with Muguruza.
