New beautiful expat destination in Portugal – ‘exclusive, rustic and private’

The Algarve region has long been one of Portugal’s most desirable expat destinations due to its stunning beaches, golf courses and great weather. But one up and coming area has caught the eye of some expats.

The French designer, Jacques Grange, has owned a holiday home in Comporta for over a decade.

He said: “There’s not much in Comporta for miles and miles, which is exactly the reason to be here.”

Julian Walker, a director and Portugal expert at Spot Blue International Property, said: “At the heart of it, Comporta is somewhat exclusive and rustic and very private.”

Much of the Comporta area is a highly protected nature reserve which means it is very well looked after.

DON’T MISS

ature-loving expats will be able to spot flamingos and huge nesting storks in the Comporta region.

The area is extremely popular with Portuguese resident and other European nationals who stay in their holiday homes for the summer.

Many choose to travel around in golf buggies or Mini Mokes. Others prefer just to ride a bicycle around the beautiful region.

Dietrich E Rogge, founder of Rockstone Real Estate, said: “Life in Comporta is centered around people’s homes, which is where they spend their time and gather with their friends and families.”

Privacy is a major factor of life in Comporta where people tend to keep to themselves rather than socialise in bars and restaurants.

While homes are normally set back from the beach due to the rice paddies, expats will have beautiful shores to explore.

Much of the stunning coastline is sheltered from any Atlantic winds by gorgeous sand dunes.

At Praia da Comporta, expats can sit back under a parasol with a chilled jug of sangria from one of the beachside cafes.

A 1,000 square foot property in the Comporta region usually costs between £290,700 and £363,000.

Larger luxurious places with extensive grounds can cost as much as £3.6million which is more expensive than The Algarve.

However, prices for groceries and everyday costs are often lower in Portugal than expats would find in the UK.

Lisbon was recently found to be the cheapest capital city in the whole of Western Europe.
