Neighbours finale: Stars and fans react to emotional final episode

After 37 years and almost 9000 episodes, Neighbours has finally drawn to a close with a whopping 90-minute special tonight.

Former Neighbours stars, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce, Margot Robbie, Natalie Imbruglia and Holly Valance, all returned to the show that launched their glittering careers as part of its blockbuster finale.

Stars past and present were among the legions of fans paying tribute to the long-running soap.

Delta Goodrem posted a video of her singing Neighbours’ catchy theme tune, and added: “Goodbye @neighbours. Tthe show has been with us all our lives, feeling emotional today that it’s ending! Thankful for the memories and all that it gave us️.”

Steph McIntosh, who pkayed Sky Mangel, said: “Neighbours was the show you dreamed to be on and wished to be on. I think it happened at such a young age, every emotion. It was incredible, it was an actor’s dream.”

Kylie Minogue said: “It was lovely, emotional, driving into Ramsay Street was quite something…. there was a lot of talking about memories and going back in time.”

Olympia Valance wrote on Instagram: “WOW. So that’s it, the last episode ever of Neighbours. What an end of an era for us all. Big love from Greece, Flick and Paige.”

Kym Valentine, who played Libby Kennedy, said: “Farewell and thank you Neighbours. It has been an honour and a privilege to spend 27 years of my life with you.”

April Rose Pengilly wrote: “The hardest thing I’ve ever done, but what a wild ride.”

Jason Donovan said: “Farewell! Thank you. ‘That’s when good neighbours become good friends’.”

And Alan Fletcher, AKA Dr Karl Kennedy, said: “If you think about this ending and all the people who have come back… and willingly, it’s because they’re so grateful for what Neighbours gave them.”

Fans shared their devastation over the beloved program’s end, taking to Twitter to express their sadness at the era coming to a close.

“Jokes aside, it really sucks that it’s over. Neighbours was a massive avenue into TV and film for a huge amount of Aussies, not only actors but writers, crew, directors, and plenty more,” one user wrote.

Many said the finale had left them in tears.

“Nobody text, crying over the finale Neighbours,” one wrote.

“I’m dehydrated from ALL OF THE CRYING,” another said.

“Bawled my eyes out and I haven’t watched it in 20 years,” a third wrote.

It was announced in March that Neighbours was being axed after Australian production company Fremantle media failed to find a new broadcast partner, following UK network Channel 5’s decision to withdraw its partnership.

Channel 5 had been covering the majority of the production bill.

More than 60,000 fans signed a petition to try to save the show after it emerged that Channel 5 had pulled out, but it wasn’t enough.

“Neighbours is more than just a TV show – it is a source of comfort and entertainment for generations of fans who have watched it for decades,” the Change.org petition said.
