‘Neighbour keeps complaining about my garden – so I blocked her view of it’

Even the smallest of disagreements between neighbours grow disproportionately when left to fester, but most conflicts start with boundary disputes.

At least this was the case for one man, whose neighbour had the luck of enjoying views of his garden due to the layout of their properties.

When life’s demands took precedence and garden work fell behind, one rude remark from his neighbour over the appearance of his garden quickly caused their relationship to sour.

Addressing the ordeal on Reddit, he said: “My grandpa passed away two years ago and I moved into his house.

“He was pretty healthy but he let the yard go down a bit, the grass was maintained but the trees were overgrown, and his pond and patio were dirty.”

“Our neighbour, years ago, sold their year to a property builder. Our properties are in an L-shape so our neighbor was using our backyard as her ‘virtual’ backyard.

“For the past two years, I have been trying my best to maintain the backyard, while also working and dealing with grandpa’s stuff.”

Due to stress and work, the man fell behind on his garden work, intending to get back on it once he had regained full strength.

Before he knew it, however, his neighbor has marched over to his house and ordered him to take care of the “mess” that was in his backyard.

The man retaliated: “I have a lifestyle outside this house, if it bugs you that much you’re more than welcome to do the work’.

The post continued: “Following that, bylaw came by and they were very understanding about my situation and gave me more than enough time to feel better and mow the lawn.”

His neighbour’s out-of-place comment left a bitter aftertaste, pushing him to build a high fence that would obstruct his neighbour’s view of his garden.

“Well, that whole thing got to me and I wanted to get the typical white picket fence as there wasn’t a fence and we were passively looking for a dog,” he explained.

“I decided, screw it, and built the largest fence I could and since her house was right on the property line she now looks out the window and instead of seeing my backyard, she sees just a wood fence.”

Responding to the post, one user joked: “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Too bad that with you eight ft fence, she’ll never know.”

“I can only imagine the sour cat-face this neighbor must make towards you now and of course, you can maintain the backyard lawn to your own preferences now that she can’t see it,” wrote another.
