‘Need to adjust’ Expats in Cyprus share one thing that could put people off living there

The Mediterranean island offers expats idyllic villages, stunning beaches and vineyards to explore. According to estimates, there are at least 50,000 British people living in Cyprus.

The majority of British expats live in the Paphos area of Cyprus, a city on the southwest coast of the island.

The quaint Paphos Old Town has a huge range of cafes and shops to discover and there are also many ancient ruins in the area.

Greek mythology says that the goddess of love, Aphrodite, was born close to Paphos which might explain why so many expats fall in love with the area.

However, despite the island’s beauty, there’s one aspect of living in Cyprus that some people might not be able to handle.

As part of the HSBC Expat Explorer survey, expats in Cyprus shared their tips for living in the country.

One said: “It’s a small place and an island country. So it’s more like living in a small tourist town than a city.”

They warned any potential expats should “have your expectations set right before you come here”.

The island lifestyle might not suit people who prefer a bustling city environment to peace and quiet.

DON’T MISS

HSBC states that many of the island’s idyllic villages have a traditional way of life but locals are welcoming to expats.

Another expat also said that adjusting to life in Cyprus might take some time for newcomers.

They said: “Rent for your first year to see if you enjoy the environment and the very hot summer weather. You do need to adjust. The people are lovely.”

The Cypriot climate might not suit everyone with temperatures reaching soaring highs of above 35 degrees in summer.

Summer weather conditions are very hot and dry with only minimal rain showers to break up the heat.

Even in the winter months, British expats can expect an average maximum temperature of 16 degrees.

If they can handle the heat, expats will be able to enjoy between 300 to 340 sunny days per year.

Food is a highlight of life in Cyprus and expats can taste traditional foods including souvlaki, a type of grilled meat kebab.

Vegetarians can enjoy fried halloumi dishes as well as delicious vegan options including chickpea stew.

According to JustLanded, the average price of a two bedroom apartment in Paphos is €150,000 (£128,440).

A townhouse in the city will cost around €214,000 (£250,000) while a new villa costs an average of €500,000 (£428,000).

Expats say that newcomers who make an effort to get to know local people will most likely have a better experience.
