DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand Waqf Board has decided to implement the NCERT syllabus in madrassas across the state. Currently, there are 419 registered madrassas in the state, out of which 103 are of the waqf board. A decision has been taken in a recent meeting of the board to introduce the NCERT syllabus in 103 madrassas as part of a pilot project. Religious teachings will take place from 6 am to 8 am in these institutions, followed by regular classes, Uttarakhand Waqf Board chairman, Shadab Shams, said. Besides, the board has also decided to develop one madrassa as ‘smart madrassa’ and 10 others as model institutions, he added.
Estimates suggest that there are about 1,000 madrassas operating in the Himalayan state, and the number of their students ranges between 70,000 to one lakh. Currently, more than half of the madrassas are not registered with the waqf board.
According to Shams, till now, “no major steps were taken for the welfare of madrassas and its students.” “The degrees offered failed to provide jobs to the madrassa students and the system has continued for decades. It is time for some positive changes and we have taken a firm step in this regard.” He further said that the Rehmania madrassa of Roorkee is being developed as a ‘smart madrassa.’ “Besides, 10 other madrassas of the board would be developed as model instituRepresentational phototions so that people can see the level of education being imparted and the facilities provided to the students there.”
Shams added that the introduction of NCERT books in madrassas would also help “students enter the mainstream.”
“Quran reading and religious teaching will be done for two hours, from 6 am to 8 am, and thereafter, regular classes will be conducted. We want a bright future for the students who are struggling to find jobs,” he said.
Last week, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had approved the survey of all the madrassas – both registered and unregistered – in Uttarakhand, adding that “a detailed survey is important to get a clear picture of such institutions.”
