NBA champs in turmoil after teammates brawl

The Golden State Warriors are considering disciplinary action against All-Star forward Draymond Green following an altercation with a teammate.

According to The Athletic, Green and fourth-year guard Jordan Poole were initially involved in a “heated interaction” during practice before Green “forcefully struck” Poole.

Neither player is understood to have sustained any serious injuries as a result of the clash, and team officials are currently reviewing the incident.

Green and Poole’s clash resulted in practice being stopped as Warriors teammates attempted to mend fences between the two championship players.

According to Yahoo’s Chris Haynes, an emotional Green was “apologetic” towards Poole in the aftermath of the incident, with the altercation one that had built up throughout training camp.

Adding a wrinkle to the clash is that both players are up for contract extensions, with Poole expected to receive one in-season, while Green looks likely to have to wait until after the season.

Green, a four-time NBA All-Star, signed a four-year, $153 million extension with the Warriors in the summer of 2019 and has a player option worth over $42 million on the final year of that deal for the 2023-24 season.

Poole is eligible for a rookie extension and could earn a deal of up to five-years, $288 million on his next contract. He is under contract for approximately $6 million for the 2022-23 season.

According to Haynes, Warriors teammates have noticed a change in Poole’s behaviour throughout training camp as he approaches his big payday.

Golden State is one of the highest-spending teams in the NBA, boasting a team payroll of approximately $300 million for the 2022-23 season.

Those close to the team have noted that Poole and Green have been known to get into heated exchanges, and Green is no stranger to challenging his teammates.

The do-it-all forward was famously suspended for a game in 2018 for “conduct detrimental to the team” when he called then-teammate Kevin Durant a b—h during a game in Los Angeles.

Poole was one of the NBA’s most improved players last season, and played a key role in the Warriors’ fourth championship win in eight seasons.
