Nathaniel Rateliff’s bourbon is here. Plus, a haunted airplane hangar and more things to do this weekend in Denver
Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats’ bourbon release
Saturday. After four long years of waiting, The Block Distilling Co. will release a whiskey it created in conjunction with the Denver band National Rateliff & the Night Sweats. The Night Sweats’ 4-Year Bonded Straight Bourbon was aged in seasoned casks and made with yellow, red and blue corn, millet, and malted barley, rather than rye and wheat.
A two-year version of this same whiskey recently won gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (a limited number of autographed bottles of this one will be available for purchase as well); $10 from every bottle will go to the Marigold Project, which is the band’s nonprofit and helps fund more organizations working on economic, social, and racial justice. Some band members will be in attendance.
The 21-and-up party, from noon to 2 p.m., includes a food truck and DJ at The Block, 2990 Larimer St., in Denver. Get more information at theblockdistillingco.com. — Jonathan Shikes
Maria Bamford’s naked brilliance
Through Saturday. Trailblazing, startlingly funny comic Maria Bamford is a hero to both club stand-ups and alternative bookers, speaking with brutal honesty about mental health and gender and spirituality (and, yes, her adorable dogs) while never losing sight of her self-effacing core.
The star of Netflix’s criminally underappreciated “Lady Dynamite,” Bamford is a prolific and always-touring presence who will take over the big room at Comedy Works South at the Landmark for five shows Thursday, Oct. 20-Saturday, Oct. 22. Tickets are $30.
Also at Comedy Works, this time at the Larimer Square club: Stand-up Dan Mintz, best known for providing the voice of Tina Belcher on “Bob’s Burgers” (everyone knows she’s the best character, OK?) amid many more TV credits. Five shows Oct. 20-22. Tickets are $17-$23 per show. comedyworks.com — John Wenzel
Haunting the hangar at Wings Over the Rockies
Saturday. The Lowry neighborhood’s Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum never has trouble standing out amid Denver’s crowded family-friendly events, given its unique setting. This weekend it returns with its Hauntings in the Hangar, featuring a magic show, “Black Hole listening station,” trick or treat stations, “phantom” photo booth and more spooky delights.
“Come dressed up as your favorite Star Wars character and see the Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter and Anakin Skywalker’s Podracer,” organizers wrote, noting the museum’s popular scale replicas — after all, Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, is a backer. Pre-registration for tickets is suggested to help lines, but it’s not required.
Tickets are free to any child under 3; youth (4-16) are $12 per ticket; adults (17-64) are $19; seniors (65+) and military are $15 per ticket; and SNAP Youth (4-16) are $1 per ticket. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 7711 East Academy Blvd. wingsmuseum.org — John Wenzel
Queertoberfest has 20-plus craft brews
Saturday. Denver’s Goldspot Brewing hosts its 2nd annual Queertoberfest this weekend, featuring beers from more than 20 breweries such as TRVE Brewing, Bierstadt Lagerhaus, Wah Gwan Brewing, Cerebral Brewing, Ratio Beerworks and Jagged Mountain.
Goldspot is “a queer woman-owned and run brewery” that’s dedicated to donating money to nonprofits that help the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, according to a statement. In this case, $1 per pour will go to each participating brewery’s choice of a nonprofit; 25% of all sales will go to queer or BIPOC organizations and will be matched by the brewery.
The party runs from noon to 6 p.m. at 4970 Lowell Blvd. in Denver. There will be pretzels by Little Red Kitchen. Admission is free. — Jonathan Shikes
Speaking of boozy LGBTQ benefits…
Sunday. The newly opened Town Hall Collaborative, a women-owned gathering space featuring a bar, cafe, live music, events, and creative spaces for classes and artist studio rentals, is holding its Lavender Libations fundraiser to celebrate LGBTQ History Month.
Stop in between 4 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, to support their social mission rooted in empowering women and other underrepresented groups. Listen to speakers and performers from Colorado community and enjoy themed cocktails like the Josephine Baker and the Hanky Panky, organizers wrote.
The fundraiser, hosted by Denver artist Sofie Birkin and local organizer Billie Mari, benefits One Colorado. 525 Santa Fe Drive. Tickets are free but register ahead at eventbrite.com. More information at townhallcollaborative.com — John Wenzel
