Nagaland moving towards an all party government

This development has taken place after parties in Nagaland came together after formation of the Core Committee for Naga Political Issue on June 16.

Several leaders stated that this move is to facilitate ‘one solution, one agreement.

Last month Nagaland Government had notified a Parliamentary committee on Naga political issue comprising all the 60 members of the Nagaland legislative assembly, and the two members of Parliament from Nagaland.

Nagaland chief minister Neiphu Rio has invited NPF to join the PDA government.

Secretary General of the NPF and party spokesperson A Kikon said, “We are consistent with our stand on Naga political issues. An idea is being mooted out to have an opposition-less government so that we can push the issue of resolution to the Naga political issue further. NPF legislature party meeting recently where all the legislators have supported the move to have an opposition-less government and join the PDA government.”

He informed me that things will take final shape within a weeks’ time.

A senior leader in Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) who does not want to be named said, “A decision on this will be taken after Union home minister Amit Shah’s Shillong visit on July 24.”

BJP, which is one of the constituents of PDA is yet to make its stand clear. Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton said that he will comment on this issue after getting clearance from the party High command.

In 2015 eight congress MLAs joined the government and later merged with NPF and this became the first all party government.

The NPF is the single largest party with 25 MLAs in Nagaland in a 60-member assembly. The NDPP led government in Nagaland has 20 members. The BJP which has 12 members is a partner of the government.

An NPF leader who does not want to be named told ET, “Discussion are within the party and very soon a decision will be taken.”

Convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) a platform of non-congress parties of Northeast India, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he is not aware about the move as after taking over as Assam chief minister he is not much updated about the political developments of North eastern states.
