Naga Munchetty’s husband calls ambulance as star screams in pain

Naga Munchetty said her worried husband, James Haggar, was forced to call an ambulance at the weekend as the presenter screamed in pain.

The BBC Breakfast presenter said she lives in constant pain that can become so acute that she has to scream as she addressed her latest flare-up.

The 48-year-old said she “screamed non-stop for 45 minutes” as she opened up about the painful condition.

Naga explained she had been diagnosed with adenomyosis just eight months ago – a condition where the endometrium (lining of the womb) is found deep in the myometrium (muscle of the uterus).

Common symptoms include heavy, painful, or irregular periods to pre-menstrual pelvic pain and feelings of heaviness as well as discomfort in the pelvis, according to the NHS.

One in 10 women is thought to have adenomyosis, yet it can often go undiagnosed for years.

Naga told her BBC Radio 5 Live listeners today: “Right now as I sit here talking to you: I am in pain. Constant, nagging pain.

“In my uterus. Around my pelvis. Sometimes it runs down my thighs.

“And I’ll have some level of pain for the entire show and for the rest of the day until I go to sleep.”

Naga shared that on Saturday night she was left in excruciating agony.

“On Saturday night I came home from the theatre and my adenomyosis flared up,” she commented. “I was in so much pain I could barely walk from the car to my front door.”

The BBC host went on: “It was only with my husband’s help that I made it upstairs. The pain was so terrible I couldn’t move, turn over, sit up. I screamed non-stop for 45 minutes.

“In the middle of the night, the pain returned and it was even worse. My husband called an ambulance and by the time they called back the pain had subsided. A little.”

She added: “That pain, my goodness, I couldn’t move. I was entirely dependent on my partner. That pain had left me powerless.”

Naga described it as the “evil sister” to endometriosis which has similar symptoms.

The BBC presenter revealed she stopped having periods for ten years after she was given a contraceptive injection called Depo which releases the hormone progestogen to suppress ovulation.

The pain she suffered during her monthly cycle admittedly left her feeling “sad, weak and angry”.

She was “furious” after being advised to come off of Depo when she reached age 40 due to the risk of getting osteoarthritis and subsequently went on the coil.

Naga said: “Eight months ago I bleed for eight days straight, full on bleeding. I was put back on the mini pill but [the bleeding] didn’t stop. I went for an ultrasound and that’s when they found something, adenomyosis.”

The BBC presenter has previously been open about her difficulties in using the coil and said that too left her in pain.

Naga Munchetty on BBC Radio 5 Live airs Monday to Wednesday at 11am.
