Mark Adderley has reflected on his struggles with alcoholism, prompting his wife Nadia Sawalha, 58, to “cry again”. Mark took to Instagram this morning to share an honest admission about his battle with addiction, in view of his 46,000 followers.
The filmmaker began recalling harder times he had faced after stumbling across an old family photo while visiting his mother over the Christmas period.
In the snap, Mark could be seen grinning while cradling his and Nadia’s daughter Maddie, now 19, but has now revealed his seemingly happy facial expression was “strained and enforced”.
Describing the memory, Mark wrote in the caption: “Found this whilst at my moms earlier this week … and isn’t it weird how a photo triggers countless memories and feelings?
“Firstly my Ma was the same age in this photo as I am now … give or take a year.
“Maddie was just button beanie and still at that stage where every movement of her arms or legs was an echo or tracing of the same movement in her mum’s tummy.

“The fridge behind us was (bizarrely) my first ever Xmas gift to Nadia (with whom I was already in the foothills of a relationship about to be blighted by raging addiction) … and then, most troubling is the fact that I can see the strained and enforced smile on the face of a then active alcoholic.
“This was me at my most chaotic, out of control and sad.”
Mark added: “I knew I had huge reasons to be happy because of our dear dear baby girl – but drink had me in its grip. I can see a strained smile and dead eyes.
“I can see me wanting to be part of a defining family photo – and I can see me fighting countless demons.”
Mark’s other half Nadia was one of the first to comment on his post, writing in response: “You’ve got me crying again .. am so so so proud of you .
“The work you have done on yourself , the work you continue to do ,and the constant self reflection and desire to make amends with all those you hold dear is awe inspiring .
“Don’t ever let anyone tell you different or hold your ‘pathologies’ against you .
“We can ALL learn from YOU .
“I will always roar in the face of anyone who tries to manipulate your humble kindness .
“You are a f**king incredible husband and father . Love you now and beyond this mortal world .”
Last year, actress and Loose Women presenter Nadia paid tribute to Mark as he celebrated 17 years of sobriety in 2021.
Nadia revealed that Mark had unwittingly used alcohol as his “medication” for “the agonies of Bi polar 2 and depression”.
The ITV star explained that Mark had only been diagnosed with mental health issues in 2021.
Nadia heartbreakingly added that at the time, “he was told that he would have been trying to deal with his illness since he was five or six years old”.
