Mystery Covid case rocks tourist hotspot

A mystery case of Covid-19 in a popular tourist area remains ‘under investigation’ by health authorities.

Western Australia has recorded 13 new local cases of Covid-19 overnight, including one mystery case in a tourist region.

Ten infections are linked to the Coolbellup cluster, including eight household contacts and two close contacts.

One other local case is a household contact from the Safety Bay cluster, and another attended Willagee IGA.

The final case is in the Greater Bunbury region and remains “under investigation”.

“It is believed this case was infectious in the community and contact tracers are working to identify potential exposure sites,” WA Health said in a statement on Monday.

“All cases are in self-quarantine now and public health will continue to monitor them.”

WA also recorded two travel-related cases overnight.

There are now 96 confirmed active cases in WA, with 27 in hotel quarantine and 69 in self-quarantine. No cases are in hospital.

Anyone in the Perth, Peel and the South West regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result – even if they have not visited a listed exposure site.

Mercy Day Care Centre in Thornlie has been added to the list of exposure sites, with the full list available here.

Almost 5000 people were tested on Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities are still closely monitoring two vessels off the WA coast, with both reporting probable cases on-board through returned positive rapid antigen tests.

“All positive crew members on-board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely,” WA Health said.
