My Time In Palestine – Mahira Begum George Greens School
We often hear in the media the appalling side of war-torn countries and are blinded by the destruction that we often forget the beauty of it. During September 2022 I travelled to Palestine with my family and I witnessed the country’s history. I was in complete awe of my sights. Yes, there was a lot of grief-stricken families and broken homes but the one concept that ket them all together was the overpowering love they shared for each other. Palestine is a country which I have always wanted to travel to and for me it was an experience of a lifetime. I have observed many things within this trip which has changed the outlook I have on life and has also made me appreciate the small-scale things which I would have previously taken for granted.
There were many precious moments which are engraved in my heart and there were also moments where I felt completely helpless. Witnessing the abhorrent conditions which these innocent people lived in really made me take a step back to realise how deeply affected these people were. The one element in which all these people had was hope. Each one of them have hope that one day their country will be free. Through all this torment that they all face they all still have faith that that there will be an end to all this pain. During my time there I have seen children who protest and use their tiny voices to create a loud impact. Regardless of age, background, race, religion we should all use this as an example to stick and fight by what is right. I also visited an orphanage and had first hand conversations with these children and within an hour of meeting them I immediately felt attached to them. These children who have nothing had the biggest smile on their faces as if they had everything. This was one of the most heart-warming memories which I will forever cherish.
Another memorable aspect of my trip was discovering the history behind this country. Palestine is extraordinarily rich in culture and history and consists of a diversity of religions. As I was there I came accross many mosques, synagogues and churches. Jerusalem is home to many religions and it holds importance to all the Abrahamic religions. I entered the Dome Of the Rock and also went into the Al-Aqsa Mosque which is 988 years old and had the honour of praying inside of it which many Palestinians are restricted to do.
An assumption that many individuals accross the world may hold is that there is a feud between Muslims and Jews, especially in Palestine. However, my experience was different as I felt welcomed regardless of my religion. Although my experience within Palestine was positive millions of Palestinians are treated as if they are outsiders within their country. Through my journey in this beautiful country, the main thing that I have taken away with me is that we are all part of one race which is the human race and we should always suport the right cause and fight for what is right.
