‘My mother-in-law is wearing funeral attire to my wedding’

A woman revealed she was stressed that her mother-in-law was planning on wearing a black dress to her upcoming wedding ceremony.

However, she wasn’t sure whether or not she was overreacting, so took to a Reddit forum to ask for advice.

She explained that her mother-in-law needed two occasion dresses because both her son and daughter were getting married in the same year.

For her daughter’s wedding (a summer wedding with a navy and pink theme), the mother-in-law bought a “beautiful” navy dress, “perfectly on theme”.

However, for her and her fiancé’s winter wedding a few months later, her mother-in-law purchased a “solid black” dress with a strip of gold, even though the wedding colours are supposed to be light blue and gold.

While the bride-to-be didn’t think her mother-in-law was being deliberately malicious, and she doesn’t sense any “direct animosity”, she did believe that her fiancé’s mother was “incredibly attached” to him.

She divulged: “She still has done things to put a wedge between us, for example she once had a well known speaker corner me and tell me that I was breaking my fiancé’s mother’s heart by ‘forcing him’ to move in with me to live in sin before we get married.”

With several months until the wedding, she asked the Reddit forum if she had a point in expecting her mother-in-law to buy a new, more appropriate dress.

She asked: “It doesn’t seem right to me that she wears a beautifully appropriate dress to her daughter’s wedding and then basically funeral attire to her son’s / my wedding.

“Am I overreacting? Has anyone gone through this before?”

The forum was divided, as while many Reddit users empathised with the stressed bride, others were on her mother-in-law’s side.

Reddit user @pineconedance said that black isn’t “unheard of” for a winter wedding, but suggested offering to “brighten up her look” with a colourful scarf.

@Benanov offered: “Honestly, black is ok for winter weddings. If she’s only wearing black it’s fine. It’s if she’s making continual nasty comments that you would want to step in.”

@kornberg said: “As long as she’s not in full mourning, with a veil and lace hanky, I would try not to read too much into it.

“She could be making a statement, or she could just not want to wear a gold dress to your wedding. Black is ok for winter weddings. It’s honestly fine for most weddings, as long as it’s accessorised appropriately.”

@crazycatpants85 said: “Not as bad as red at a funeral. But I still see what you mean. Let her make an a*** outta herself by herself and say nothing.”

@southerngirlproblems empathised: “My mother-in-law did the exact same thing at my wedding. It backfired on her though – legitimately everyone called her out for it. It was glorious.”
