My car FAILED its MOT for an unbelievable reason that’s easily avoided
A MOTORIST has taken to TikTok to warn others about how her car managed to fail its MOT for a simple reason.
The video was uploaded by TikTok user @katieejon and shows her printed MOT report.
A caption on the video reads: ‘Lesson learnt don’t forget to take your air freshener off your car when taking it for an MOT.’
The video then zooms in and ‘Fail’ can clearly be seen on the MOT report.

Underneath in the ‘Repair Immediately’ section, it says: ‘Driver’s view of an obligatory external mirror significantly affected by an obstruction central front (air freshener hanging from rearview mirror).’
The Government’s official MOT advice states: ‘You must check that all mandatory rear-view mirrors or indirect vision devices provide an adequate view to the rear from the driver’s seat.’
It then states a car will fail its MOT if an obligatory mirror or device is missing, is slightly damaged or loose, is inoperative, is excessively damaged or insecure or it is not providing an adequate view to the rear.
In this case, it looks like the air freshener chosen by the TikTok user is too large or has been hung in a way that it blocks the rearview mirror.
An MOT costs around £50 and it’s frustrating for a car to fail for such a small thing.
Most garages will offer a free re-test if a car fails, but it’s still a waste of time for everybody involved.
People had mixed reactions to the video in the comments section.
One said “That’s tight, my garage just removed mine for me before starting the mot.
“I didn’t even know it wasn’t allowed until after when I saw it on the seat????”
While another said: “Hang it from a rear grab handle instead ???????? it is a jobsworth move to only fail on that but technically they aren’t allowed to remove anything.”
