Muswell Hill poets head to Parliament to recite their stories
Young creatives from a Muswell Hill writing group returned to the Houses of Parliament to read their stories and poetry for the first time since Covid.
The Beatpoets, founded by Jay Hansen, has been established for nearly eight years and is based at Muswell Hill Library.
The group, comprising Ella, Emily Isabella, Izzy, Livinia, Lola, Maya Max, Melissa, Seena, Sitara, Sophia met Haringey MP Catherine West who hosted their BeatPoets recital session.
The young poets explore “many aspects of literature and broaden their horizons through expressing intrinsic ‘thought’ and debate”, said Jay.
She said when attending Parliament they always dressed in an androgynous fashion, with dark attire, ties and hair tied back to represent “oneness” and equality.
The trip included a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, which Jay said “proved to be enchanting and tremendously informative about the power of democracy and law”.
