Murmu seeks bigger role by IITs in grooming state’s institutes – Times of India
GUWAHATI: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday insisted on a bigger role by IITs in grooming state level institutions.
Speaking at IIT Guwahati on the first day of her maiden visit to Assam as President, Murmu hoped that IIT Guwahati, being the only IIT in the northeastern region, must nurture other institutions in the region to uplift the overall academic environment in the region.
“IIT Guwahati is a knowledge centre that can provide technology solutions to connectivity issues and other challenges in the region. Since this is the only IIT in northeast, IIT-Guwahati must shoulder responsibility to nurture other institutions in the region, work with state government and defence forces to strengthen our borders and provide technological solutions to prevent recurrence of natural calamities in the region,” she said.
Murmu urged the premier technology institute to encourage innovations, work towards indigenization in cutting-edge technologies, provide skill development avenues and be a forerunner in making the country Aatmanirbhar.
Murmu, who also inaugurated supercomputer Param-Kamrupa in IIT Guwahati, said the powerful supercomputer facility will help IIT Guwahati to address challenges in healthcare, quantum computing, big data analysis, advanced weather prediction and other fields. “It will also help in advanced use of Artificial Intelligence and provide immense service to the nation,” she added.
President Murmu also virtually inaugurated Dhubri Medical College in western Assam and laid the foundation of the zonal institute of National Institute of Virology, Dibrugarh from the IIT Guwahati venue.
