Allan Moffat’s son, James Moffat, will trade his Renault Megane for a Ford Mustang in this year’s SpeedSeries season.
Moffat will continue racing for Garry Rogers Motorsport, ditching the TCR Australia Series for a campaign in the National Trans Am Series.
The three-time Bathurst 1000 podium finisher will race the car that Nathan Herne took to the title in Trans Am last year.

It marks the end of an unbroken streak in TCR, having contested every season since its 2019 inception.
“I’m excited to be driving in Trans Am,” said Moffat.
“The racing is clearly very exciting, for both drivers and fans alike, and it has become more competitive over the last couple of years as well.
“There’s plenty of young talent coming up through the category and also plenty of drivers with lots of experience and it creates a good mix on the race track.

“The Hoosier tyre plays a big role, being a cross-ply tyre, it lends itself to sliding across the track which is an exciting sight for spectators.”
Despite Moffat’s prowess, he won’t have it easy with a throng of talented up-and-comers as well as experienced heads expected to challenge for the 2023 title.
Among those expected to return are last year’s runner-up Owen Kelly as well as youngsters Lochie Dalton, Ben Grice, and Jett Johnson.
“Each year we’re seeing more quality drivers up the front of the field and there’s now plenty of variety with different teams getting involved and it’s creating a racing product that only gets better every time the category goes racing,” said Moffat.
“The main challenge for me will be adapting as quickly as I can, and fortunately I’ve got that prior experience to draw on from 2021.
“As with any championship, consistency will be the key, but even more so in Trans Am where it’s proper elbows-out racing.
“GRM has a great data pool to draw on for each round now, and I know I’m driving for the best team who will provide me with a great car.”
Moffat has some Trans Am experience under his belt.
He made a one-off appearance in the class in 2021, taking a race win by the weekend’s close at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Moffat’s father, Allan, won the Australian Touring Car Championship four times and took outright victory at the Bathurst 1000 on four occasions.
All three victories came with the factory Ford team, famously leading a one-two finish for the marque at the 1977 Bathurst 1000.
In later years, he drove an iconic Mazda RX-7.

Although most famous for his exploits in Ford and Mazda machinery, he once drove with Peter Brock and the factory Holden team in 1986.
The opening round of the SpeedSeries takes place at Symmons Plains for Race Tasmania.
The TCR Australia Series will headline the action alongside the National Trans Am Series, Touring Car Masters, and S5000.
