Mother’s Day Special: Genelia Deshmukh says motherhood is taken very positively in the industry
Mother’s Day is a unique celebration of the love and connection between a mother and child. It’s a time when we show our respect and gratitude for all the hardships and hard work our mothers go through for us.
Genelia Deshmukh got married to long-lime beau Riteish Deshmukh in 2012. The couple’s first child, son Riaan, was born in 2014 and their second son, Rahyl, was born in 2016. She did take a break from films due to mommy duties but now has become active as an actress once more. Her Marathi language film, Ved (2022), where she was paired with Riteish, was a blockbuster at the box office.
When we contacted her for her views on motherhood, Genelia talked about the changing dynamics in the industry around balancing career and motherhood. She said, “Mums in our industry and motherhood in our industry are taken very positively today; it should have always been there. I don’t know why earlier, when a girl got married and a girl became a mom, it was like – career over – but I don’t think that is the case anymore.”
She added, “You see a lot of moms and a lot of women going out there, you know, handling their jobs, and women are great at multitasking, and that is something that every man will agree to. So they definitely know how to look after their home, their children, and their work because, after a particular point in time, after the kids are 6 and 8, they really have their own lives, they really go to school, and they spend a long part of the day in school. So, I think if you know how to figure out your entire dynamics—you know, house dynamics, your schedules—it’s very, very possible.”
She further shared her personal experience and said, “I mean for me, for one, I wasn’t very comfortable working initially when my kids were little. I just wanted to be a mom. I wanted to be available. I wanted to be there. I wanted to be a part of every football match. I wanted to be a part of every time they walked, fell, or ran. You know, so I took that choice of being away for ten years, and when I felt that I was ready, I did come back. I did some good work. I did four films.”
