Mother allegedly killed in front of children honoured

A mother and midwife who was allegedly murdered on Christmas Day has been remembered for her passion for helping other women in need.

The mother who was tragically killed in front of her two teenage children in Tasmania has been commemorated as a “beautiful woman” who had a passion for helping women.

Rachel Wake, 52, was allegedly murdered at a Mornington address in Hobart on Christmas Day.

Police arrived at the home on Binalong Rd at about 1.30pm after receiving reports a woman had injuries to her upper body.

Ms Wake was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Darren Mark Wake, who is known to the woman, was charged with her murder.

He appeared in an out-of-hours session in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Sunday and did not apply for bail.

The registered nurse and midwife has been remembered as a loving mother who was committed to her work and had a passion about caring for other women at their most vulnerable moments.

Her employer Tasmanian Obstetrics & Gynaecology Specialists took to social media to send their love and condolences to all that knew Ms Wake.

“Rachel loved life. She sparked joy with her passion for women and birthing, and she radiated love when she spoke of her loved ones,” the post read.

“Our deepest sympathies go to her family and her partner. She will be so deeply missed.”

A GoFundMe page was established after her death with the proceeds going towards her children to help them rebuild a life without her.

A $100,000 goal has been set, with more than $63,000 raised within 24 hours.

On that page, many people paid tribute to Ms Wake and shared their stories of how they knew her.

“Rachel delivered our second son. I remember her as a caring, gentle and capable nurse. I feel so sad to hear she is no longer with us,” one person wrote.

“Rachel supported (us) through miscarriages and the birth of our two boys … She was kind, patient and very understanding … There are few people in this world that you meet and leave a lasting impression — Rachel was one of them. (We) are truly heartbroken for her children, but want them to know how special their mum was to even those that she met only briefly,” another said.

Police urge anyone the with information about the alleged incident to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
