MMA fighter Mark Martin was rushed to hospital after suffering a gruesome eye injury during his fight in the PFL Challenger Series.

The American was in action against Dilano Taylor on Friday night, taking some hard shots from his opponent in the opening round that immediately caused damage around his left eye.

The doctor entered the cage to inspect the injury before the start of the second round.

The fight was then immediately stopped with Taylor awarded the win.

Live images showed the grizzly severity of the injury with Martin’s left eye appearing to be protruding out of the socket as a result of the damage.

It was announced shortly after that the fighter had been rushed to hospital to receive treatment.

The PFL Challenger Series has been described by the promotion’s CEO Peter Murray as ‘American Idol meets MMA’.

The series pits undiscovered talent from around the globe against each other with the winners to be rewarded with a PFL contract.

Serving as a feeder system, the winners of the Challenger Series then enter the promotion’s regular season format in April with the winners of that gruelling campaign handed a cheque for $1million.

Jarrah Al Silawi and Chris Mixan have both been handed deals after Week Two of the Series.
