MIO: Odisha to provide skilled manpower to world – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: The state is planning to skill the youths of Odisha keeping the demand of the world in mind. It is the vision of the state, said Odisha chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra while deliberating in the ‘Make In Odisha’ conclave here on Friday.
“We will not only meet the demand for skilled manpower for the state or country, but also provide skilled human resources to the entire world. We have also started preparation for this,” said Mahapatra attending the thematic session on ‘Skilled-in-Odisha’.
He said the state government has given importance to skill development in the last few years. It has already created a department for skill development and technical education and established Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) to work on a mission mode to take the skill of youths to a new height, he added.
Mahapatra said that skilling is a dynamic sector and today’s skill may become obsolete tomorrow. “We have to do a lot of research and identify the areas where skilling will be required, so that we can be future ready. Our OSDA is regularly discussing and collaborating with different industries and institutions to find out which are the areas where we can scale up our skilled manpower and provide a much better livelihood to the young population of the state,” he added.
After OSDA, we have partnered with ITES Singapore for collaboration. “For the first time, our state has sent hundreds of principals of ITIs and Polytechnics to Singapore for training. They stayed there for a few weeks and took training in different subjects. We have set up the World Skill Centre with the collaboration of ITES Singapore, which is operational now. First batch was admitted to the WSC this year. It will act as a hub and spoke model to develop all our ITIs and polytechnics throughout the state,” he added.
He said the infrastructure of ITIs, polytechnics have been refurbished. Manpower has been trained to meet the challenge of the future. “Now ‘Skilled in Odisha’ is a brand. Our skilled manpower has earned good name and fame and made our state proud. Odisha’s skilled manpower has huge demand in every sector now. Odisha’s boy has brought the first gold medal for India in WorldSkills competition, which is known as Olympics of skill,” he added.
Official sources said World Skill Centre will handhold 10 ITIs and 10 polytechnics for skilling the trainees so that they can be job ready in India and abroad.
The event accommodated numerous business collaborations with top industry leaders on various areas like skill enhancement, technology adoption, establishment of some of the largest state-of -the art technology labs and centers, skill-based certification program for a wider global recognition.
