Mind-blowing EV does 0-60mph in 1.5 seconds – but people are divided on its name

THERE are so many hypercars around these days that it’s easy to take some of their massive performance numbers for granted.

However, the figures from this new electric car are so incredible it deserves more attention.

But getting quite a lot of attention already is its name, which has been dividing the opinions of car fans.

Its called the, er, McMurtry Spéirling.

There’s a good reason for it – the founder of the company behind it is Irish entrepreneur Sir David McMurtry.

Spéirling is Irish for hurricane – using clever fans at its rear it literally sucks itself to the road with an instant 2000kg of downforce.

This limpet-like tech means the Spéirling can use its 1000hp more efficiently and thus do 0-60mph in just 1.5 seconds.

Also helping is the fact it weighs less than 1000kg and has two electric motors.

With former F1 driver at the wheel, the Spéirling headed to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and took the hillclimb record there with ease.

Its time of 39.08 seconds dethroned the 39.9-second run by the VW ID.R in 2019 by almost a full second. That’s quite a margin at this level.

The video showing its win has to be seen to be believed – it looks like it has been sped up, but in fact, the McMurtry is just that quick.

Although the Spéirling is designed for racing, as reported by Autocar, managing director Thomas Yates has promised a road-going version with a similar amount of power.

He said: “We want to provide something that you can drive through the centre of London, and then take onto a track.

“It will never be the most comfortable over speed bumps, but that’s not really the point.

“The point is you have this unbelievable, loud, exciting, electric really compact car that you know will be the fastest [car] at any track day you attend.”
