Millions of Zoom users warned hackers might be WATCHING – check your app today
ZOOM users have been warned to update their app after a dangerous security flaw was uncovered.
Experts found a bug that could allow hackers to take control of your machine.
The issue was limited to Mac only.
Security researcher Patrick Wardle sounded the alarm at a conference in Las Vegas last week.
The problem apparently affects the Zoom installer, which needs special permission from the machine’s owner to run.
With control of this tool, hackers could basically “trick” Zoom into installing anything they like.
This would then allow cyber criminals to root around your computer, changing anything they like.
Worryingly, they could even change, delete or add files.
Within just a few days, Zoom has rolled out a patch for the issue – known officially as CVE-2022-28756.
The fix is included in version 5.11.5 of the app.
How to update Zoom
To download the update, Mac users should open Zoom and select zoom.us at the top left.
Click Check for updates.
Version 5.11.5 should appear for download.
What is Zoom?
- Popular chat app Zoom is best-known for offering video calls – including calls with huge numbers of people
- There’s a free tier with unlimited meetings, but these group chats are capped at 40 minutes
- The most expensive tier gets you meetings with up to 1,000 participants, but there are cheaper options
- Perhaps the only downside is that Zoom has had privacy issues in the past, which may put some businesses off
- Signing up to Zoom is free and easy
- You just need a valid email address, and the willingness to accept Zoom’s privacy policy and terms – which are fairly standard
- Anyone can sign up to Zoom by download the app, or heading to the official website
