This summer, blondes will be switching up their shade to a new hue – and they’re looking to the humble cuppa for inspiration.

Milk tea blonde is said to be the hair colour of the season, racking up over 2.4 billion video views on TikTok and millions of likes and comments.

It’s inspired by the variety of bubble tea that contains milk – rather than classic English Breakfast which us Brits are particularly partial to – and encompasses the beige and brown elements of both the drink itself and the tapioca pearls it contains.

Although milk tea is an ashy blonde, it’s not to be confused with the icy platinums we’ve seen elsewhere: it’s darker, for one, but also has a slightly pink undertone that’s softer and more universally flattering.

Like the barista blonde colours that are trending right now, milk tea blonde can work as an all-over tint as well as in a highlights, balayage or ombré look.

‘This blonde shade is quite cool tone and ashy and can be adjusted to suit different skin tones,’ Celebrity Hairstylist and Bblonde Brand Educator, Jason Collier, tells Metro.co.uk.

Most hair needs to be lightened to achieve the creamy shade, so it’s best to visit a salon if you’re not confident bleaching at home or are starting with a very dark base.

Ask your stylist for a medium ashy blonde and show them pictures of the exact hue you’re after. You could even bring them a bubble tea to serve as their colour palette (and to enjoy, of course).

If you’re giving it a go at home, Jason recommends starting with the Jerome Russell Bblonde Maximum Blonding Kit to lift the hair.

Other lightening products from the likes of Bleach London and Schwarzkopf can also work – just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter and err on the side of caution to avoid damage.

Once your hair is lightened, the next step is creating that perfect milk tea tone.

Jason says the colour can be a permanent dye or a semi-permanent toner depending on your needs, adding: ‘For permanent I recommend Bblonde Permanent Hair Colour Ash, and for semi-permanent try Bblonde Maximum Blonde Toner Pearl.’

Pearl and ash are the key words to look for, but try not to over-tone as this can make your blonde seem somewhat dull and muddy.

When it comes to aftercare, Jason says: ‘Bleached and coloured hair will always require extra TLC so ensure you use purple pigment shampoos and masks.’

He also advises using a bond maintenance treatment, to ‘keep your hair and your blonde shade looking stronger and healthier for longer.’
