Mico Suyan’s Batman ’89 Variant Homages Iconic Jim Lee Art

Michael Keaton’s Batman stands in the same pose that Jim Lee made famous for the cover of Batman #608, which kicked off the Hush storyline.

A new variant cover for the upcoming first issue of Batman ’89, illustrated by Mico Suayan, homages Jim Lee’s classic cover for Batman #608.

Suayan’s artwork shows Michael Keaton’s cinematic version of Batman standing with one leg atop a gargoyle, cape swirling around him in the Gotham evening breeze. Lee’s art for 2002’s Batman #608 features the exact same pose, and was one of several covers illustrated by the artist — now Publisher and Chief Creative Office of DC — to kick-off the fan-favorite “Hush” storyline.

Suayan’s variant cover is exclusive to Big Time Collectibles, which posted a comparison of both images on Instagram. Pre-sales of the cover are now available on the store’s website, starting at $19.99.

Lee approved of the homage, taking to Twitter to retweet a post that Suayan made showing a black and white version of the cover.

DC has released a slew of other retailer-exclusive covers to celebrate Batman ’89 #1, including a team variant by Ken Taylor and Taurin Clarke, as well as other variants by the likes of Francesco Mattina and Carla Cohen.

Written by Sam Hamm and illustrated by Joe Quinones with colors by Leonardo Ito, Batman ’89 #1 goes on sale Aug. 10 from DC Comics.
