Michael Caine fan makes mosaic tribute on landmark birthday

A coin mosaic portrait of Sir Michael Caine has been created to mark his 90th birthday by a Manchester-based artist. The image depicts the film star in one of his most famous roles as British secret agent Harry Palmer.

The Oscar-winner actor played Harry Palmer in three 1960s films – The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain.

The portrait consists of thousands of coins, sourced from a bank in the southern Spanish town of Coin.

Artist Ed Chapman said: “I chose to make Sir Michael using Euro one cents as they’re smaller than pennies so can create more detail and they’re also a sort of nod to Caine’s film The Italian Job where gold was taken in Europe.

“I haven’t decided what to do with the portrait as of yet. At the moment I’m seeing his eyes follow me around the room and the portrait seems to change as the sun’s angle alters through the day.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Michael opened up about ageing in 2015.

“You’re all very young here and I’ll tell you what’s going to happen when you get to my age, he explained.

The actor went on: “You’re going to go ‘what happened? About eight years ago I was 36.’

“And it’s all gone by so quickly.”

Michael continued: “But a reporter once said to me, ‘How do you feel about growing old?’

“I said, ‘well, considering the alternative, fantastic.'”

The on-screen star previously addressed his recent health woes the two-time Oscar winner broke his ankle in 2018.

“I have a spine problem,” he revealed to BBC Radio Two presenter Mark Kermode in 2022, adding that it affects his leg, meaning he “can’t walk very well”.

His wife, Shakira, told the Daily Mail: “He had a back operation quite recently. He had spinal stenosis.”

The Mayo Clinic explains: “Spinal stenosis happens when the space inside the backbone is too small.

“This can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that travel through the spine.”

Michael credits his wife for his long life saying in a candid interview with The Sun On Sunday, in 2017, said: “Without her, I’d have been dead long ago. I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and smoke several packs of cigarettes.”
