Mets owner Steve Cohen tweets thinly veiled shot at ‘unproductive’ New York offense

Is it still arm-chair GMing when you own the team?

Mets owner Steve Cohen has been something of a firebrand since officially taking the reins of the team. His outspoken Twitter personality has gotten him in hot water in the past, but it has also offered something of an unfiltered look at a mad owner.

On Wednesday, after another frustrating Mets loss, Cohen delivered a thinly veiled shot at the team, blasting its putrid offensive approach.

“It’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive. The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The slugging and OPS numbers don’t lie,” Cohen’s tweet reads.

In a word: Yikes. But Cohen’s disappointment is understandable.

The Mets are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Giants on Tuesday night, and their offensive futility in 2021 is reaching new lows: At 3.78 runs per game, the Mets are one of just three teams in the majors averaging fewer than four runs per game. The others: the Rangers (3.75) and the Pirates (3.59).

New York NL slipped a game under .500 on Tuesday with the loss to San Francisco, continuing their freefall in the NL East. Since the All-Star Break, the Mets are 12-20 and have lost the division lead, with the Phillies and Braves overtaking them.

While the Cohen-Mets era is just getting underway, the heat — and tweet — is already on.

If the Mets need an offensive jolt, Tim Tebow is available.
