Metal Gear Solid Iconic Heliport Cutscene Looks Amazing In Unreal Engine 5

Despite being one of the best games ever made, Metal Gear Solid hasn’t been yet remade for modern gaming hardware, forcing players wanting to experience the mission that made Solid Snake such an iconic character to get the original PlayStation version or the controversial The Twin Snakes remake released on Nintendo GameCube.

While a proper remake has yet to be made, dedicated fans have taken it upon themselves to imagine how one powered by modern technology and game engines like Unreal Engine 5 would look like. A few hours ago, JacktheLighting shared a new video showcasing one of the game’s most iconic cutscenes recreated in UE5. Needless to say, it looks amazing and makes us want a proper remake even more.

This is a remake of the opening sequence from Metal Gear Solid (PSX – 1998). Thanks to Unreal Engine 5 and the Lumen technology, I’ve been able to recreate the iconic heliport scene where Solid Snake gets to see for the first time Liquid Snake while he flies an Hind-D.

This cutscene took me one month to complete, while the Heliport itself took a good 75% of this time window. I really pushed Unreal Engine 5 to the limit while working on this project, with graphics and post processing that would be suitable for next-gen like PlayStation 5.

I wanted to keep the mood similar to the original game but also incorporating camera shots from Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, since they feel more adequate for a cinematic feel.

Even though no official announcement has been made, something seems to be brewing for the Metal Gear Solid series. According to rumors circulating online, a remake of the PlayStation game is currently in the works and should be revealed no later than May 2023. Raiden’s voice actor Quinton Flynn also revealed last month that announcements related to the series will be coming soon, so it really looks like 2023 will mark the return of the Metal Gear Solid series following Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami and the mediocre Metal Gear Survive.
