Met Gala ticket prices upped to an eye-watering ‘$50,000’ weeks before bash

Tickets for this year’s Met Gala – which famously takes place on the first Monday of May – have reportedly been upped by a hell of a lot of money.

Tickets normally cost around $30,000 (£24,000), but this year they’ll apparently set guests back $50,000 (£40,000).

While the move is said to have caused outrage among some, others don’t see what all the fuss is about.

It’s Metropolitan Museum of Art donors who pay for tickets, and of the price jump, one source said: ‘These people are already donating so much, to then ask for that amount is a lot.’

However, speaking to Page Six, another insisted: ‘For every person that decides not to go, 20 people will line up behind them and beg to come.’

This year’s Gala theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.

The late Chanel creative director was a regular at the star-studded event up until his death in 2019 and the dress code is simply ‘in honour of Karl’.

Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel and Roger Federer are this year’s hosts and will serve as the evening’s official co-chairs.

Of course, last year’s theme was Gilded Glamour and the most show-stopping look of the night came courtesy of Kim Kardashian.

Kim rocked up wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic ‘Happy Birthday’ dress.

Marilyn wore the sparkly gown to sing happy birthday to President John F Kennedy in 1962 and Kim sparked huge backlash with the outfit.

After the event, the Skims founder was forced to deny claims that she physically destroyed the dress.

Due to the age and provenance of the dress, no alterations were able to be made to it, meaning Kim had to lose 16lb to fit into it for the occasion.

The precious garment was transported by guards and fans were assured that the utmost care was taken over the 60-year-old dress to ensure it arrived back in mint condition.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, which displays the dress, had previously said in a statement: ‘Great care was taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history.

‘With input from garment conservationists, appraisers, and archivists, the garment’s condition was top priority.

‘Believe It or Not! no alterations were to be made to the dress and Kim even changed into a replica after the red carpet!’
